Kenai Grand Jury indicts Calderwood on murder of missing Homer woman

Yesterday (Sept. 22nd 2022), a Kenai grand jury indicted Kirby Calderwood for kidnapping, sexual assault, and the murder of A. M., a 38-year-old Homer woman missing since Oct. 17, 2019. A. M. are her initials.

Calderwood, 32, is charged with nine felony counts: one count of murder in the first degree, three counts of murder in the second degree, two counts of kidnapping, one count of sexual assault in the first degree, one count of manslaughter, one count of tampering with physical evidence.

A. M. lived at Main Tree Assisted Living, where she was reported missing after she didn’t go to a doctor’s appointment. Calderwood worked at the facility. In April 2022, a Kenai Peninsula Crime Stopper Tip reported Calderwood as responsible for A. M.’s death and also gave an address of his girlfriend’s parent’s unoccupied house where the crimes allegedly occurred. In May, A.M.’s watch was found during a search of Calderwood’s residence in Ogden, Utah, and a missing person’s flyer of A.M. was found on his dresser. A woman in Utah gave a statement to the investigator that Calderwood had confessed to the murder.

These charges are only allegations and are not evidence of guilt.  All defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial, at which the prosecution must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Calderwood remains in custody in the State of Utah, pending extradition to the State of Alaska after resolution of charges he faces in Utah. In Alaska, he faces more than 99 years if convicted of the charges.
