House Votes in Support of Don Young Day

The Alaska House Majority has announced the passage of House Bill 141, which would establish June 9th as Don Young Day, in honor of the late Congressman.

Don Young served as the United States House of Representatives member from Alaska for an astounding 49 years, making significant contributions to both the state and the nation. House Speaker Cathy Tilton (R-Wasilla) expressed her pride in the bill, stating, “This bill recognizes the extraordinary service of Congressman Don Young and provides a meaningful way for Alaskans to honor his legacy.”

The bill, which amends AS 44.12 by adding a new section to article 2, would establish June 9th of each year as Don Young Day, to be observed by suitable observances and exercises.

“This day will be a way for Alaskans to honor Congressman Young’s long record of public service.” House Rules Chair Representative Craig Johnson (R-Anchorage) praised Young, stating, “Don Young was a true statesman and a fierce advocate for Alaska. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Alaskans and his impact will be felt for generations to come.”

Don Young was known for his dedication to the state of Alaska and its people, having championed Alaska’s interests in Congress for nearly five decades. Throughout his career, he fought for natural resource development, Native Alaskan rights, infrastructure improvement and the second amendment among other causes.

The overwhelming support by the House to pass HB 141 demonstrates the House’s respect for Congressman Young’s legacy and the significant impact he made on the state of Alaska. By establishing Don Young Day, the people of Alaska will have an annual opportunity to honor and remember the remarkable service of this distinguished public servant.
