Healthcare today

by Peter Twitchell

I had my post-op for my hernia surgery today February 24, 2022 at the Alaska Native Medical Center hospital. I ran into an old friend who asked me how I’ve been. I told the person of the purpose of my doctor visit and my second ultrasound, which was being scheduled a day later.

My friend said to me, “Let me tell you how it should be with you as an indigenous native under the care of a government hospital. You should have got your ultrasound today to further diagnose any problem. They should have had a spot reserved so they could diagnose a problem during post-op.”

This comment from my friend took me by surprise and kind of shook me awake from dozing. His comment was making sense.

We commit our healthcare to a government hospital that has come in leaps and bounds. Medicines are getting better and better and give us longevity. We keep striving to do better as individuals and as a team, working together with our healthcare providers. We are all collectively working as partners and teams, as clients and owners for our native healthcare system in Alaska.

Our frontline workers during this COVID-19 epidemic advocate for the better treatment of their patients.

Our Almighty Creator God is at work in our hospitals through native healthcare professionals for the sake of improving our daily life. I tell my healthcare provider who has been my healthcare provider for 15 years that we’re a 50% partnership. I have to start striving to take better care of my health and he’s been there for me every step of the way making sure all my medical needs have been met. I’m very thankful to Creator God for taking care of me through his servant.
