Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a State disaster emergency to provide assistance in Tununak. Tununak suffered a fire that destroyed the water treatment plant, or washeteria on Feb. 16th, 2022. On February 17th, 2022, the Tununak IRA Council President declared a local disaster with a request for state Public Assistance.
“We know the washeteria was not being utilized for drinking water, but it provided showers and laundromat services while providing water to the YKHC clinic,” wrote Governor Dunleavy in an online post. “Our efforts are focused on establishing temporary laundry and shower services there, as well as assisting the community with fire debris clean-up.”
