United States Air Force Environmental Restoration Program Five-Year Review Cape Newenham LRRS

Public Notice – The United States Air Force (USAF) Environmental Restoration Program announces the beginning of the Five-Year Review process for Cape Newenham Long-range Radar Station (LRRS), Alaska.  A Five-Year Review is required by Section 121(c) of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the National Contingency Plan §300.430(f)(4)(ii) because hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants remain onsite above levels that allow for unlimited use and unrestricted exposure.

This process will document whether the remedy implemented for the response action at Site SS007 (Upper Camp PCB Spill) remains protective of human health and the environment. The remedy selected for Site SS007 in the November 2000 Record of Decision and March 2020 ROD Amendment was Soil Removal within targeted areas, Cap Maintenance, Annual Inspection, and Institutional Controls. This will be the fourth Five-Year Review for this site.

The USAF recognizes the importance of public participation in the Environmental Restoration Program and encourages your involvement. If you have any questions or concerns about the Cape Newenham LRRS cleanup program, or if you have direct knowledge regarding the effectiveness of the cleanup remedy, the USAF would like to talk to you. Verbal and written comments to be considered during the Five-Year Review may be provided to Mr. Todd Fitch Remedial Project Manager, Air Force Civil Engineer Center

by mail at: 10471 20th Street, Suite 348, JBER, AK 99506-2201 or,

by email at: [email protected], or

by phone at: 1-800-222-4137.

The Air Force requests that comments for the Five-Year Review be provided to the Air Force by November 20, 2021. Another public notice will be issued informing the community that the review is complete. (282)(10/27-11/17)
