Commercial vehicle disposal fees cut by half

Vehicle disposal fees at the Bethel landfill have been reduced for commercial users by 50% for one year, says Bethel City Council. By temporarily reducing the disposal fee by half for commercial users, the City aims to encourage higher rates of junk vehicle removal, improving the aesthetic and environmental conditions in the community, and also reducing the long-term burden of abandoned vehicle management.

City Council passed Action Memorandum 25-19 during their May 27th, 2025 regular meeting.

“The City continues to experience challenges related to the accumulation of junk and abandoned vehicles. Commercial users – such as auto repair shops play a significant role in the vehicle clean-up process but have cited disposal fees as a barrier to increased participation,” says the action memo.

To qualify for the reduction in the disposal fee, the commercial user must have an active and current business registered with the City of Bethel and have a commercial utility account.

“I really do like the fact that you put in there to qualify for the reduction the commercial user must have a current and have a commercial utility account,” said Mayor Rose “Sugar” Henderson. “Hopefully that will help bring people up to code like they should be in the first place.”

Action Memo 25-19, sponsored by City Manager Lori Strickler, passed unanimously by a vote of 5-0, and is effective for a duration of one year.
