The City of Bethel council will be considering adoption of an ordinance that would remove usage of the Senior Citizen Exemption Card and allow alternative proof of senior citizenship. There will be a public hearing during the June 24th, 2025 regular council meeting for Ordinance 25-10.
The item was introduced by City Manager Lori Strickler on June 10th, 2025, which passed on the consent agenda.
Currently, Bethel Municipal Code requires that senior citizens who wish to benefit from sales tax exemptions apply to the City Finance Department for a senior citizen exemption card.
“The senior citizen exemption cards are difficult for the City to track, cumbersome for seniors to continuously renew, and time consuming for local businesses,” states the proposed ordinance.
“The same purpose and policy would be served by having the senior citizen produce a valid form of identification proving that they are 65 years of age or older, while reducing the administrative burden to both the City, the public and our local businesses.”
The City says that the same purpose and policy would be served by having the senior citizen produce a valid form of identification proving that they are 65 years of age or older, while reducing the administrative burden to both the City, the public, and local businesses.
The ordinance shall become effective upon passage by the Bethel City Council.
