Chevak issues resolution declaring state of emergency, request support from state

On March 7 and 8, a fire destroyed the old school in the village of Chevak. The building, unoccupied for more than 10 years, was a total loss. Chevak was able to prevent the fire from spreading to other structures and restore services disrupted by the fire.

On March 23, the City of Chevak passed a resolution declaring a state of emergency and requested state assistance to manage debris and remove hazardous materials that were used in the construction of the building. The community has not requested emergency assistance for critical life, health, or safety needs at this time.

The State Emergency Operations Center and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation are communicating with the community to address needs related to the fire and to gather additional information.
