Chevak Comets finish volleyball season at 2A State Tournament

The Chevak Lady Comets competed at the 2021 2A State Volleyball Tournament this past weekend coached by Nicole Pingayak. The Comets were joined by seven other state qualifiers: Susitna Valley, New Stuyahok, Klawock, Cordova, Dillingham, Craig, and Tri-Valley.

During the opening games of the 2A tournament, the Lady Comets lost to Tri-Valley, 25-6, 25-18, and 25-20. Their game which originally set for the afternoon took place earlier in the day. In the consolation bracket, Chevak played Tri-Valley. The scores were 25-6, 25-18, and 25-20 with Tri-Valley advancing. Chevak fans filled the bleachers at Dimond High School, the host school for the event, along with the Alaska School Activities Association.

ASAA Executive Director Billy Strickland, formerly of Kipnuk and Bethel, welcomed everyone to the 2A and Mixed Six volleyball tournaments, which took place simultaneously on two separate courts.

“On behalf of the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Board of Directors and ASAA’s corporate partners, welcome to the 2021 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Mix Six/2A Volleyball State Championships!” he wrote. “To the student-athletes, we applaud your dedication to doing your best for yourself and for your school. To the coaches, counselors and parents, thank you for continuing to support interscholastic sports and activities. And to the spectators, we appreciate your being part of this statewide championship event.”

The Susitna Valley Rams won the tournament, coming in second were the Klawock Chieftains, coming in third were the Tri-Valley Lady Vikings. In fourth were the Cordova Wolverines.
