The Chefornak Shamans are the winners of the 2022 Lower Kuskokwim School District Native Youth Olympics tournament, held in Toksook Bay home of the Islanders on April 7-9th, 2022. Teams participating at the meet including the Shamans and Islanders were the Kwigillingok Eagles, Quinhagak SeaHawks, Kongiganak Wolverines, Akula Tundra Foxes, Tuntutuliak Bluejays, Newtok Jaegers and Mertarvik Pioneers, Eek Cougars, Mekoryuk Herders, Akiuk Grizzlies, Tununak Coasters, and Nunapitchuk Wolves.
The Chefornak Shamans won with 182 pts., coming in second were the Kwigillingok Eagles with 146 pts., and in third was the host team of Toksook Bay with 120 points.
Notable finishes included Chefornak’s Michael Flynn who hit 65” in the high school boys One Arm Reach event and Crystal Moses from Toksook Bay who seal hopped 126.75 ft.
All Stars for the high school girls was Kyra John of Kwigillingok. She scored 60 points. For the boys it was Michael Flynn of Chefornak with 52 points.
Next in NYO is the 2022 State Native Youth Olympics finals in Anchorage to take place April 21-23, 2022 – the first in-person NYO state event since the pandemic began which will take place at the Alaska Airlines Center. Teams will bring banners to display during the Grand Entry of Athletes on opening day.
Native Youth Olympics makes a positive impact in the lives of our youth. It gives them incentive to work hard in school, to stay in school, to be healthy and active in sports, and also to learn sportsmanship and respect. Thank you to all of our NYO sponsors, coaches, parents, and athletes.
