Celebrate Alaska Native Plant Month

Today (May 1st, 2025), Governor Mike Dunleavy issued a proclamation encouraging Alaskans to recognize the importance of native plants to Alaska’s people, economy, and ecosystems by celebrating Alaska Native Plant Month in May 2025.

This is the third consecutive year in Alaska celebrating our 2,500-plus native plant species, from the berries that fill our freezers to the wildflowers that brighten our summers.

An Alaska Native Plant Month event calendar, K-12 curriculum guide, self-guided hikes, gardening resources and other educational materials can be found here: bit.ly/AKnativeplantmonth.

Why celebrate native plants? Insects, birds and other wildlife have co-evolved with our native plants. We can help protect them by growing and caring for native plants in our communities, removing non-native invasive species and educating ourselves about the many benefits of native plants.

All 50 states have established a native plant month. The effort to celebrate one in Alaska began in 2023, and since then, more than 20 Alaska organizations have participated in developing native plant month activities and materials.
