BRHS Lady Warriors finish strong at State XC finals

Payton Boney of the Bethel Regional High School girls Warriors cross country runners led her team to a sixth place finish at the 2021 State Cross Country finals this past weekend, hosted by the Alaska School Activities Association. Her time for the 5K Division II race was 23:51, overtaking four runners during the event to place 26th overall.

Following close after was senior Fiona Phelan. She crossed the finish at 24:16 in 29th place. Their teammates Jordan Klejka and Cadence Cedars finished together in 47th and 48th position with times of 26:02 and 26:03.

Maya Komulainen, Katherine Alqaq Small, and Beth Hensley also completed the course, finishing in 54th, 55th, and 60th.

The leaf and mud covered race course at Bartlett High School was slick and runners finished splattered in mud. It rained the whole time from when the Division III racers began at 10am until about 1:30pm when the Division II girls started their race.

Four Mount Edgecumbe runners also competed at the state competition: Jelsey Gologergen, Aries Bioff, Sarah Bahnke, and Sarah Nanouk-Jones.

The top runner from rural Alaska for the girls was Awaluk Wookie Nichols of Nome, she completed the course in 23:05.

Galena runners also finished, Sable Scotton and Jade Thurmond.

Winning the race was Jayna Boonstra of Kenai, she crossed the finish line with a time of 19:47. Boonstra was in third position for much of the beginning of the race. By 4.1K she had the lead and finished 23 seconds ahead of second place finisher Anna Prussian of Sitka. Boonstra is the daughter of former Tununak residents Todd and Kelli Boonstra.

YK Delta region boys compete in Division II State XC Race

Yukon Kuskokwim delta region runners raced at the 2021 State Cross Country Division III Boys Cross Country championships last Saturday at the Bartlett High School XC Trails in Anchorage, AK.

Isaac Titus of Scammon Bay flew across the finish line in seventh position at the. His time was 18:23. Titus’ best finish was in 2019 where he finished second. In 2020 he placed third.

Other Yukon Kuskokwim delta region state runners included Hooper Bay’s Latrell Lake. He completed the race in 15th place with a time of 19 mins. His teammate Jesse Nanuk finished in 41st, his time was 20:46.

Kongiganak’s Sean Lupie finished strong in 29th position. He crossed the finish line in 20:09.

Chevak runner Ace Hill also competed. He raced to a 32nd place finish with a time of 20:20.

Tuluksak also sent a runner to state – Sigurd Napoka. He sprinted to a 35th place finish, his time was 20:25.

Darquel Agwiak of Mountain Village completed the race course in 20:36, placing 38th.

Chefornak’s Matthew Panruk II placed 39th, running the 5K in 20:36. His teammate Brayden Abraham also raced, finishing in 78th position.

Aniak runner Sherman Kelila competed in the event also, finishing in 20:55 and taking 44th place.

Emmonak also had a runner at state – Nathaniel Jensen. He placed 46th with a time 21:08.

A pair of racers came from Nelson Island – Raymond Chanar and Felton Albert. They posted times of 21:09 and 21:48 placing 47th and 52nd place.

Kenneth Snyder of Akiachak also made a trip to the State finals. He ran the race in 22:13 finishing in 59th place.

Three St. Mary’s runners also competed – David Beans II, Caleb Kamuck, and Leo Long. They finished 65th, 73rd, and 79th.

Coming in 1st was Uriah Lucas of Petersburg. He finished in 17:38. In second was Leo Wald of Haines. Third place finisher was Justin Trail of Nikolaevsk. Congratulations to all the runners!

Smith leads Region I boys in Division II state cross country race

Landon Smith of the Bethel Regional High School Warriors cross country team was the top finisher for Bethel and for Region I at the State Division II Cross Country race which took place this past Saturday at the Bartlett High School trails.

Smith crossed the finish line in 21st place with a time of 18:35.5. His teammate Peter Crow came in 38th, he completed the 5K course in 19:20.

Mt. Edgecumbe Braves Jacob Friske and Landon Varga also competed in the race, finishing 40th and 41st. Jaden Andrew also raced for MEHS, crossing the finish line in 20:06 in 47th. Kotzebue runner Ezra Jones came in 48th.

The team from Nome with seven runners placed 6th and Galena placed 7th.

Grace Christian School runners dominated the race, coming in first overall and taking four of the top five spots. Grace runner David Sliwinski won with a time of 16:44.

Division III XC girls compete at State

Runners from the Yukon Kuskokwim region competed at the 2021 Girls Division III Cross Country Race Finals in Anchorage this past Saturday, racing at the Bartlett High School Trails.

Shayauna Bukowski, representing Nenana, placed 7th overall. She finished with a time of 22:46.

Ernie Joe of the Hooper Bay Lady Warriors finished in the top 20. She finished in 19th place with a time of 24:17.5. Ariana Tall-Lake, also of Hooper Bay placed 30th at 26:22.

Coming in 22nd place was Michelle Atcherian of Chevak. Her time was 24:30. Her teammate Angelina Chiklak finished in 27th position, her time was 25:32. Also running from Chevak was Mariah Nash, finishing in the 53rd spot.

Marshall’s Marisa Boliver also competed, placing 32nd.

Aniak runners Cheyenne Steeves and Lanea Phillips ran the race, completing the course in 36th and 38th place.

A trio of Toksook Bay Lady Islanders also made it to the state finals. Jasmine Simons, Irene Chakuchin, and Rosemary Tass Henry finished closely together in 39th, 42nd, and 45th place.

Mertarvik’s Glennesha Carl also raced with a time of 29:27, placing 49th overall. Her teammate Autumn Nevak completed the race in 36:59 finishing in 62nd place.

Akiachak’s Keitha Phillip ran the course in 30:20, finishing in 52nd position.

Three St. Mary’s runners made it to state, finishing in 59th, 60th, and 64th were Michele Andrews, Flora Prince, and Naureen George.

Haines runner Ariel Godinez-Long won the race title. Her time was 20:31. Teagan Rude of Glennallen came in 2nd. Rounding out the top three was Liana Carney of Wrangell.
