Fifty-five Bethel Regional High School seniors marched into their beloved WarriorDome to the familiar strains of Pomp and Circumstance last Friday to attend their graduation ceremony.
Graduates included honor students, Ayaprun Elitnaurvik alumni, Upward Bound and National Honor Society students, Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program participants, College Model UN Participants, and also UAA Associate Degree recipients.
Congratulations to the BRHS Class of 2025!
The commencement ceremony began with the grand entrance of faculty and guests, then the soon-to-be graduates. Special speakers included BRHS Principal Alicia Miner, this is her last year with Bethel Regional High; student-selected speaker Alvino Vasquez who also presented the class gift – a mural, staff-selected speaker Sydney Lincoln, and commencement speaker James Reames.
A moment of silence was taken to remember the late Melissa Engebreth who was part of the Class of 2025.
“I’ve been looking forward to this day for months, celebrating what these students have accomplished throughout the year,” said Principal Miner during her welcome remarks. “When I look back on this year I know I will truly remember every single one of you. A fun fact: the Class of 2025 and I started BRHS on the same day. It has been such a privilege to watch you grow.”
Members of the Bethel Advisory School Board and Ms. Miner presented the diplomas and the grads transferred their tassels from right to left, signifying the transition from student to graduate.
The new graduates performed a very old traditional Eskimo Dance from Newtok to commemorate their accomplishment.
A final slideshow was shown before the recessional showing the graduates as cute little babies and toddlers and then as grown young adults. And the day before graduation, the seniors put on a motorcade parade throughout Bethel to celebrate, a tradition that began during the covid-19 pandemic.
In August of 2020, these students began their freshman school year amidst Covid-19. They endured and persevered through the hardships and made it through.
During the reception, the grads were showered with gifts and photos were taken with elated family and friends. The BRHS Class of 2025 was also honored with scholarships which totaled $1,095,500 to help them on their next educational journeys. Congratulations! Good job, well done, we wish you all the best!
