The Bethel Wrestling Club traveled to the Alaska USA State Wrestling Tournament in Wasilla to compete in the Folkstyle, Greco, and Freestyle wrestling meets for boys and girls on May 5-8, 2022. In the Folkstyle Tournament Bethel placed 7th and 26 of 32 wrestlers brought home medals. In the Greco Championships the Bethel team placed 10th overall. The Bethel ladies also competed in the Women’s Freestyle event and placed 3rd – twelve of thirteen wrestlers were awarded medals at this meet. In the Freestyle tournament girls could wrestle with boys, the Bethel team placed 9th overall, according to TrackWrestling.

“This was our one and only competition for the Alaska Season, other than three of them competed at a tournament in Anchorage a couple of weeks ago. We had a lot of first time wrestlers,” stated Bethel Wrestling Club Leader, President and coach. “Our goal is to get as many wrestlers to join this great sport, not only to teach them about wrestling, but we also teach them a lot of life skills as well.”

The Bethel Wrestling Club would like to thank this year’s Sponsors for their outstanding support and generous contributions: Donlin Gold – Prime Sponsor; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10041 – Prime Sponsor; Alaska Commercial Company – Gold Sponsor; Bethel Native Corporation – Silver Sponsor; Casey’s Carpet – Silver Sponsor.

“We would also like to thank our parents for believing and trusting in our system/program. This program truly is a Family,” said Coach Lieb. “And lastly, thank you to all of our coaches: Gina Lieb, Hans Holkesvik, Marty Smith, Zach Pleasant, Pat O’Brien and Spencer Rearden. Everyone of us volunteers countless hours to try and keep our kids going in the right direction on and off the mats. Thank you to everyone!”
