Bethel NYO athletes compete in Juneau

The Bethel Regional High School Warrior Native Youth Olympics team traveled to the capital city of Juneau to participate in the 2022 Traditional Games, April 2-3 with Coach Tommy Bayayok and chaperones. The Warriors brought home many medals. Overall, there were 27 teams total participating in the event at the Thunder Mountain high school gym.

The event was hosted by Sealaska Heritage along with other sponsor organizations.

Dawnielle Patterson placed 2nd in the Scissor Broad Jump 22’ 4 ½”, 5th in the Dene Stick Pull, 3rd in the Kneel Jump 19 ½”, 5th in the One Foot High Kick 60”, 1st place in the One Hand Reach 34”, 4th in the Alaskan High Kick 48”, and 1st in the Seal/Knuckle Hop 69’ 5 ¼” for the Middle School Girls competition.

High School ladies athlete Jordan Klejka placed 3rd in the Two Foot High Kick – she kicked 70”, 4th in the One Hand Reach with a height of 50”, 4th in the One Foot High Kick with her 80” jump, 4th in the Kneel Jump at 31 ½”, 4th in the Wrist Carry 4’ 2 ½”, and 4th in the Alaskan High Kick with a height of 58”.

For the high school girls competitions Kiley Twito of the Lady Warriors placed 5th in the Alaskan High Kick and Sydney Lincoln placed 5th in the Dene Stick Pull.

Justine Erikson-Bradney also competed in the Middle School Girls division, placing 3rd in the Alaskan High Kick 48”, 4th in the Seal/Knuckle Hop 44’ 11 ¼”, 4th in the One Foot High Kick 64”, 2nd in the Dene Stick Pull, and 1st in the Inuit Stick Pull.

The Warriors hosted their Invitational NYO tournament this past weekend. Next is the State NYO Competition, April 21-23, 2022 in Anchorage.
