Bethel bestows names on unnamed parks

The Bethel City Council passed a resolution that formally names several unnamed municipal parks in the community.

“Many of our Parks are unnamed and the City of Bethel is seeking suggestions,” wrote the City of Bethel in an online post.

The Parks, Recreation, Aquatic Health and Safety Center (PRAHSC) Committee sponsored a community survey between the months of November 2020 through March 2021 to collect and vote on an official name for four of the parks that were declared “unnamed”.

Folks were invited to submit possible names and the community voted on their favorites.

The park across from the Lions Club is now the “Riverview Park”. The park on First Avenue across from First National Bank has been named the “Ice Classic Park”. The park by the Small Boat Harbor is now the “Harbor Park”, and the Bethel 4-H Youth Center playground park is now the “Independence Day Park”.

Resolution 21-09 was passed on the consent agenda during council’s May 11th, 2021 regular meeting.

“Creating a legislative record encompassing all park properties and formalizing names for those that were declared unnamed, will provide for accurate referencing and signage of properties for the future,” states the resolution.
