
The Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) held their annual convention August 28-29, 2024 in Bethel for their 56 member tribes. The convention was opened with a purification ceremony at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center by Traditional Chief Edward Adams Sr. and Cultural Resources Director John McIntyre. Delegates from the member tribes were in attendance.
AVCP Executive Board Chair Thaddeus Tikiun called the meeting to order. The Ayaprun Immersion students recited the Pledge of Allegience in Yugtun and performed the opening Eskimo Dances for the convention.
During the convention, eight resolutions were passed which are listed below.
AVCP 2024 Resolutions
•Resolution 24-08-01: Resolution Directing the State and Federal Delegation to Take Immediate Action on the Heroine, Fentanyl, and Meth Epidemic

•Resolution 24-08-02: A Resolution Advocating for Congress to Incorporate the Spending Requests Outlined in the BIA Annual Report of Public Safety and Justice Programs in Indian County to Help Ensure Adequate Public Safety and Justice Resources for Rural Alaska Native Communities

•Resolution 24-08-03: A Resolution Calling on Congress, the United States Department of Interior (DOI), the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), and other Federal Agencies to permanently establish sufficient funding and funding models for Native American and Alaska Native Communities pursuant to the “Not One More:” Findings and Recommendations of the Not Invisible Act Commission (NIAC) published on November 23, 2023.
