The high school State Track and Field Division I and II and Unified meets were held this past weekend, local athletes competed along with their counterparts from all over Alaska at Dimond High School.

The Bethel Regional High School Warriors participated in the Division II events amidst the wind and rain and a little sun. Ned Peters – a senior and BRHS graduate participated in the varsity boys 1600 meter event, placing 8th overall with a time of 4.44.48. Peters also cracked the top 5 in the 3200 meter race, placing 5th with a time of 10:06.29.

The Bethel boys also placed 8th overall in the 4×800 relay race. Their time was 9:12.63.

In the Shot Put event, Bethel’s Jacob Carmichael, a junior, launched the 12 lb. shot 31’10.75” – a new personal record. The shot is held with the fingers near the neck behind the ear and below the jaw and is “put” by extending the arm out with the body turning at the hips in one motion.

Senior and graduate Sheldon Smith competed in the Triple Jump for the Warriors, landing a solid 32’11.75”. In this event the athlete takes off with a running start down a runway then jumps off one foot then lands on the same foot they took off on, then jumps and lands with the other foot before the final jump into the sand. Overstepping the takeoff line or any incorrect foot sequences is not allowed.

On the girls’ side, Bethel Lady Warrior Roselyn Daniel, a sophomore, took part in the Discus contest. She threw the discus weighing 1 kg a distance of 65’02”. The discus is held in one hand and the thrower swings that arm and spins their body around to gain momentum for the launch before releasing. They must stay in the circle until the discus lands on the ground.

Nome’s Kendall Ulroan, originally of Chevak, earned a podium finish in the varsity Long Jump. He leapt 18’06.25 in the preliminaries and also the finals. For the Long Jump, athletes run down the runway like in the Triple Jump, then take off with one foot at the takeoff line without overstepping before soaring through the air for as long as they can before landing with both feet in the sand.

Dillingham’s Marion Coupchiak also did the Long Jump, she finished in 15th place with her jump of 11’06.75. Both the Triple Jump and Long Jump are measured to the nearest break in the sand made by the athlete. This is the first year the Dillingham Wolverines are participating in Track and Field.

Graelin Chaney, also of Dillingham, competed in the preliminary 200 meters race, his time was 25.09 placing 15th. Clay Martin took 15th in the 300 meter 36” hurdles, his time was 52.87.
