Aniak Traditional Council suspends support of Donlin Gold

The Aniak Traditional Council unanimously voted to rescind its support of the Donlin Gold Proposed Project. The Aniak Traditional Council sent their decision to Donlin Gold, The Kuskokwim Corporation, and to the Calista Corporation on August 31st, 2022.

“The Tribe of Aniak supported the Project since 1995 and officially voted support in 2016,” wrote the Aniak Tribe in a statement. “Purpose of changing our decision is because the realization of industrialization of the Kuskokwim River with proposed barging of supplies to and from Crooked Creek. This will have a detrimental impact on all subsistence activities along the proposed route for 30 plus, years. The proposed ports at Bethel and the one below Crooked Creek will see double the barge traffic during that time.”

The statement was signed by Chief Wayne Morgan of the Aniak Traditional Council.
