Amendments proposed to City code regarding discrimination and harassment passes introduction

The City of Bethel Council approved introduction of a proposed ordinance that would amend municipal code chapters related to discrimination and harassment.

Proposed Ordinance 21-34 would amend the Bethel Municipal Code stating under the Nondiscrimination and Harassment in the Delivery of City Services or Resources section that “Each and every provision of this Code shall be applied, interpreted, and construed in such a manner to ensure that neither the City of Bethel, its employees, officials, contractors, or agents discriminate against or harass any person on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression or identity, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, military status, or political affiliation in any of the City’s activities, services, or operations.”

There are also proposed amendments under the codes for Personnel Rules and Regulations and Recruitment, Personnel and Special Provisions, Revenue and Finance and Purchasing which includes bids and proposals, and the Port of Bethel and Port Administration.

“…race, national origin, color, age, religious creed, sex, political affiliation, marital status, physical handicap or other statuses protected by law,” was the old language that was stricken from those sections.

“We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, customers, volunteers, subcontractors, vendors and residents,” states Ord. 21-34. “The City of Bethel is also committed to full compliance with all federal, state, and local laws providing for the equal employment opportunities, and diversity, and prohibiting illegal discrimination.”

Mayor DeWitt is sponsor of the ordinance, which is up for public hearing during the July 27th, 2021 regular meeting.
