The Election Summary Report for the State of Alaska General Election unofficial results have been posted from election day November 5th, 2024. In Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), voters rank candidates in order of preference instead of only choosing one, the instructions on the ballot also state to rank as many or few candidates as you like.
There are still many more ballots to be counted and the Ranked Choice Voting Tabulations will be available 15 days after the election (November 20th, 2024), says the Alaska Division of Elections.
In the Presidential election, Alaskan voters favored Trump/Vance 141,883 over Harris/Walz 103,357. In the race for U.S. Representative, candidate Nick Begich received 125,222 votes (49.45%) and incumbent Mary S. Peltola had 115,089 votes (45.45%). Candidate John Wayne Howe got 9,880 votes (3.9%). There are still 2 more precincts to be counted from the 403 total voting precincts as of November 9th, 2024 as well as mail in ballots.
For House District 38 (Akiachak, Akiak, Atmautluak, Bethel, Chefornak, Chevak, Eek, Kasigluk, Kipnuk, Kongiganak, Kwethluk, Kwigillingok, Mekoryuk, Napakiak, Napaskiak, Newtok, Nightmute, Nunapitchuk, Oscarville, Quinhagak, Toksook Bay, Tuluksak, Tuntutuliak, and Tununak) Nellie “Unangik” Jimmie of Toksook Bay received 1,144 votes (38.58%), incumbent C.J. McCormick of Bethel received 870 votes (29.34%), Willy Keppel of Quinhagak had 780 (26.31%) and Victoria Sosa of Bethel had 160 votes. Sosa has stated before the General Election that she has dropped out of the race and is in support of Nellie Jimmie.
None of the four candidates in House District 38 received over 50% + 1 of the votes in the first round of voting. If, after counting all the votes on November 20th, none of the candidates go over 50% +1, voting will go to Round 2 in the RCV tabulation system where the candidate with the least amount of first choice votes is eliminated. If voters’ first choice was eliminated, then their second choice is counted and added to that second choice candidate’s first round vote total, meaning these voters (who’s first choice was eliminated due to having the least votes in Round 1) still have a say in who wins.
In Round 3, the same process is repeated until there are two candidates left and the one with the most votes wins.
In House District 37, incumbent Bryce Edgmon received 71.66 of the votes. Challenger Darren Deacon received 790 votes (27.40%). House District 39 reported that incumbent Neal Foster of Nome has 2,008 votes (57.59%) and Tyler Ivanoff received 1,465 votes (42.01%). All precincts have reported in District 37 and 39.
Ballot Measure #1: An initiative to increase Alaska’s minimum wage, provide workers with paid sick leave, and protect workers from practices that violate their constitutional rights has 138,009 Yes votes (56.62%) and the No’s have 105,740 votes (43.38%). 400 of the 402 precincts have reported.
For Ballot Measure #2: An Act to get rid of the Open Primary System and Ranked-Choice General Election has 125,610 yes votes (50.84%) and the 121,473 no votes (49.16%). 400 of 402 precincts have reported.
There are a couple very close races in this year’s preliminary results. House District 18 results with all precincts reporting show incumbent Cliff Groh (D) leading with 1,365 votes (50.50%) and challenger David Nelson (R) with 1,337 votes and 28 votes separating them.
In Senate District P in Fairbanks, incumbent Scott Kawasaki is ahead by 74 votes (4,731 at 50.27%). Challenger Leslie Hajdukovich has 4,657 votes (49.48%) with all precincts reporting.
