2A State Basketball Semifinal games

Hooper Bay Lady Warriors head to championship

The Hooper Bay Lady Warriors defeated the Glennallen Lady Panthers 30-23 during their semifinal game at the State 2A Basketball finals held at the Palmer High School. The Lady Warriors will be playing the Susitna Valley Lady Rams for the 2A State title.

The Lady Warriors reversed a six point deficit at the end of the third quarter, they were behind 20-14. In the exciting last quarter they outscored the Lady Panthers 16 to 3 to win the game and a spot in the championship game. Zoey Lake of Hooper Bay made 10 and senior Mary Long scored 9. Rose Lake had 6 points.

The Lady Warriors are coached by Brandi Hale. Players of the Game award went to #15 Mary Long for the Comets.

For the Lady Panthers CeAnika Palacious scored 11 and Jada Dahl had 5. Player of the Game went to CeAnika Palacious. Glennallen defeated Selawik in the opening round 43-22. They are coached by Jubilee Sutherland.

The Chevak Lady Comets did not fare so well. They fell to Susitna Valley 55-23. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Rams were up by one point, 13-12. By halftime they extended their lead to 27-17. India Roderick scored 21 for Su-Valley which included 5 three pointers. Her teammate Kenna Grenier had 15. For Chevak, the top scorers were Hannah Pingayak with 8 and Haley Ulroan made 7. To get to the semifinals the Lady Comets defeated Tok and Su-Valley defeated Unalakleet in the opening round.

Players of the Game awards were given to #10 India Roderick of Su-Valley and #4 Haley Ulroan of Chevak.

For the boys, the Tikigaq Point Hope Harpooners defeated the Glennallen Panthers 76-47. Henry Kowunna scored 28, Joelian Lane made 21, and Clyde Frankson had 19. For the Panthers Hunter Terrel scored 20, Ryan Albert made 9, and Dillon Cramer had 8. The Tikigaq Harpooners advanced to the State Championship for the boys 2A bracket.

In the final game of the night for the semis, the Hooper Bay Warriors lost to the Tok Wolverines 61-54. The Warriors led at the end of the first quarter 21-15, and also at the end of the half 31-24. End of third quarter was 43 Warriors, 41 Wolverines. Fourth quarter action had Tok outscore Hooper Bay 20 to 11. Nile Smith scored 18 and Evin Matchian had 17 for the Warriors. Teddy Northway of Tok scored 26 points, Jeffrey Adams had 17, and Revyn Almquist-Corgill scored 10.

Players of the Game honors were awarded to #13 Evin Matchian of Hooper Bay and #3 Teddy Northway of Tok. Hooper Bay is coached by Albert Green. Tok’s coach is Kristie Charlie.

The Tok Wolverines will be challenging the defending 2019 2A champions, the Tikigak Point Hope Harpooners for the state title.

Each semifinal game began with the national anthem sung by local students. The Chevak and Hooper Bay games were broadcast in Cup’ik via the radio and KCUK, the station based in Chevak. The games are hosted by the Alaska Schools Activities Association.
