The 2022 Wrestling State Champions for high school boys and girls teams is concluded and new state champions have been crowned. The State wrestling finals took place last Friday and Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center featuring Division I and II boys and girls athletes from all over the state.
The Alaska School Activities Association hosted the state wrestling championships.
Athletes from Akiachak, Anchorage Christian Schools, Barrow, Bethel, Craig, Delta, Dillingham, Glennallen, Grace Christian, Eielson, Haines, Homer, Hutchison, Kenai, Koliganek, Kotlik, Kotzebue, Metlakatla, Mt. Edgecumbe, Nikiski, New Stuyahok, AK, Nome, Nunapitchuk, Petersburg, Quinhagak, Redington, Seward, Scammon Bay, Sitka High School, Wrangell Wolves, and Valdez competed at the event for a chance to stand on the podium and to win team awards.
Winning a gold medal and the state title was Tristan Goodell of Koliganek. He wrestled in the 125 lbs. division. He beat Jack Stockhausen of Glennallen. Placing 5th in the same bracket was Elston Dock representing Mt. Edgecumbe High School.
103 lbs. wrestler Jason Ekamrak of Akiachak battled for the top spot against Jaxson Young of Kenai. Ekamrak placed second overall. Brendon Brown of Quinhagak took 6th place in the same weight class.
Alvino Vasquez of the Bethel Warriors also took second place in the 112 lbs. weight class.
Also taking third place was Quinhagak’s Daylon Brown, wrestling in the 119 lbs. division.
In the 130 weight class Paul Dyment of the Bethel Warriors placed second. Myles Campbell of Redington won first place.
Bethel Warrior Patricio Vasquez placed 4th in the 140 lbs. weight bracket. Deshawn Nick of Nunapitchuk finished in the 6th position for the same division.
Also placing second for the Nunapitchuk Wolves was Garrett Nicholai. He wrestled in the 145 lbs. weight division. Thomas Swalling of Redington took first in the contest. Also wrestling in the same bracket was Torian Dull of Napakiak representing the Mt. Edgecumbe High Braves, he finished in 4th overall. Bethel Warrior Jonathan Oscar took 6th place.
Scammon Bay’s Adrien Kopanuk placed third in his weight class, 160 lbs.
