The Kalskag Grizzlies and the Alakanuk Braves from the YK delta region joined eight other 1A teams for the Mixed Six State Volleyball tournament Friday, May 7th, 2021 in Anchorage. The games are hosted by Dimond High School and the Alaska Schools Activities Association.
Joining the Grizzlies and the Braves in the gym were teams from Nuiqsut, Glacier View, Shishmaref, Nikolaevsk, Buckland, Brevig Mission, Tanalian (Port Alsworth), and Gustavus.
In the opening round there were two playing courts – the Kalskag Grizzlies defeated the Shishmaref Northern Lights 2-0 in a best out of three sets. The Alakanuk Braves fell to the Nikolaevsk Warriors 0-2. The Grizzlies advanced to play Gustavus and they won 2-0. In the final game of the night Kalskag met the 2019 champion Tanalian team. Kalskag won the first set, but lost the next 3 in a best out of 5 sets. Alakanuk defeated Glacier View 0-2.
Nikolaevsk will be playing Tanalian for the championship on Saturday. Alakanuk will play Gustavus and Kalskag will be playing the winner of Shishmaref/Nuiqsut game in this double-elimination tournament.
