Team Williams wins February 50 Doubles sled dog race

The Mike Williams Jr. team of Akiak featuring Mike and his son Kohle are the winners of the February 50 Doubles Sled Dog Race this past weekend. They finished the approximately 46 mile race in 4 hrs. 34 mins. Mike Williams Sr. was at the finish line to welcome the team and to give a big hug to his grandson.

Coming in second were Darren George and Jed Nose of Akiachak. Their finishing time was 4:44. In third were Robert Charles Jr. and Paden Lott of the Charles Kennel of Akiachak. A total of 10 teams participated in the event.

The February 50 Doubles race took place this past Saturday, starting on the river in front of Bethel near the Riverview Park next to the Lions Club. The limit was 12 dogs per team. In this race every team is required to have two mushers, either in the same sled or with two sleds.

From the starting line teams headed downriver towards Oscarville, then crossed the river to Napaskiak. Mushers and their dogs traveled upstream on Napasiak Slough until turning off onto the overland trail towards Kwethluk. Racers made a turnaround near the Kwethluk airport then headed back to Bethel following the same route. The trail was about 46 miles and the trail had a lot of fresh soft snow along with some wind.

This race is part of the Delta Championship Series. Up next is the Campout Race scheduled for March 16-17, 2024.
