Remains found near Nelson Island

Bethel Alaska State Troopers were notified of human remains found approximately ½ mile off shore near Nelson Island by local fisherman from Toksook Bay on 6/18/18 at approximately 2017 hours. The body has been identified as Jazmin “Duna” James of Tununak. The body has been recovered. James, age 26, was reported missing earlier this year by his family on April 1.
On 4/1/2018, at about 1302 hours, Jazmin James, age 26 was reported overdue by family. He was reportedly traveling from Nunapitchuk to Tununak by snowmachine on 3/31/2018. James made it to Nightmute where he stopped briefly before heading toward Toksook Bay and Tununak. Residents in Nightmute reported James was having track problems. Toksook Bay SAR and Tununak SAR were advised by the SAR prior to AST being contacted and were out searching. At approximately 1822 hours, Toksook Bay Search and Rescue personnel located James’ snowmachine on the sea ice near rocky point. The snowmachine was revealed when high tide subsided. James was not with the snowmachine and there was no indication that he had walked on the ice from where the snowmachine was found.
