Daniel’s 70 Weeks Part 3: The Fall of the Antichrist

by Tad Lindley

If you missed the last two weeks’ columns you might want to read them first, as this is a continuation. If you don’t have access to it, please read Daniel 9:24-27 with the understanding that when matched up with human history, one week equals seven calendar years.
Great tribulation
Jesus foretold of a coming Great Tribulation at the end of time. It will be a time of great hardship for the people of God. Since Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:15 to look into the book of the prophet, Daniel, for greater understanding, we know that the duration of the Great Tribulation will be three and one half years. Through the Great Tribulation the Antichrist will be the dominant world leader. He will head an organization such as the UN or the EU. At first his identity will be concealed, but at a specific point in time (Jesus called it the Abomination of Desolation in Matthew 24:15) the Antichrist will step into a rebuilt Jewish temple and proclaim himself to be God (II Thessalonians 2:3-4).
Armageddon: Antichrist’s last hurrah
The Antichrist will hate the Jewish people. He will hate Christians as well. If you think of Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust, you have a glimpse of what the Great Tribulation will be like for both Christians and Jews (Revelation 12:17). So great will his hatred for Israel be, that he will amass the armies of the world against the Jewish nation: And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:16).
The battle plan
Armageddon is a Greek word that means the mountains or hills of Megiddo. You can find Megiddo on any modern map of Israel. It is in the Jezreel Valley. Careful reading of Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39 reveals many of the details of this event. Nations will come from the north and the south. They will move southward until they come to Jerusalem itself. John describes it like this: And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against [the Lord] (Revelation 19:19)
Jerusalem captured
The prophet, Zechariah foretells of the outcome of the Battle of Armageddon: For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zechariah 14:2 NKJV)
Jesus fights back
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords. (Revelation 19:11-16) In Zechariah we find these details: Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
The end
At the end of the Battle of Armageddon, of course the Lord prevails against the armies of the Antichrist. And the Antichrist and the false prophet are both taken and completely destroyed! And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth… (Revelation 19:20-21) And so ends the terrible reign of the Antichrist and Daniel’s 70 weeks.
